Formed in 2014, Mythraeum spawned from the minds of San Diego metal musicians who shared the same spark of mysticism and misanthropic musings which befell the black metal scene in Scandinavia several decades ago. Pioneered by the guitar duo, Wraith (Alonzo Larios) and Void (Hugh Marshall), the band was soon joined by bassist Ire (Mai-coh Black), and drummer Ignis (Ethan Stouder). Moving forward, these young musicians had ambitions of crafting a brand of black metal that dared to push the musical boundaries. Mythraeum sought to blend crushing heaviness, harrowing technicality,
and ethereal melodies in an alchemical process which weaved esoteric myths
of nature, gods, love, hate, death ,and rebirth.
A year after its inception, the band saw these concepts come into genesis with the release of its first demo in 2015. After many live performances, sharing the stage with greats like Venom inc, 1349, as well as many local acts, frustration and malaise took hold, and no longer did this quaternity see their vision as one. One may call it artistic differences or simply taking separate paths in life, others may see it as personal friction progressing to irreconcilable differences.
One-by-one, the original lineup had fallen apart,
with only Wraith left to pick up the pieces.
But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the band saw its second incarnation. A rebirth of sorts had occurred with Hagalaz (Ben Wilson) on drums, Spectre (Nicholas Lepisto) on bass, Algiz (Zach Simsay) on Guitar, and Plague (Anthony Vivoli) on vocals. A newfound energy had swept over the band and there became a driving force with a true sense of momentum. Following this,
with ambitions set higher, a full-length album was soon on the horizon.
After a year of shows, the new lineup was ready to take on the 2020 Wacken Metal Battle. The first round was met with both the glory of victory and the grief of defeat; the pandemic had finally reached a point where shows were no longer an option, and the entire world of live music was put to a halt.
This did not break the band’s drive. As they recouped their spirits, the first full-length album “The Inevitable Return” was finally completed; a fitting name for what lay ahead. With no shows to promote the release, the 5 looked to an alternative and hosted a live streaming event that showcased all songs off the album, and was revealed on 2020 Halloween Eve.
The world had begun to heal, and soon live shows had once again become part of the paradigm. The 5 once again set their sights on the Wacken Metal Battle for 2022, and after 4 arduous clashes, Mythraeum was deemed worthy to carry the torch into the final round in Germany
to represent the United States on the world stage of Metal music.
